The Different Types of Teeth Whitening Procedures

Do you know how stains get on your teeth? Explore your options for any tooth stain with these teeth whitening procedures.

Although aging Baby Boomers create strong demand for dental services, many millennials are opting for smile-enhancing services such as teeth whitening procedures.

No matter your age, whiter and brighter teeth make for a more youthful smile, making you look and feel your best. Want to flash those pearly whites?

In this article, we’ll explore your options for getting rid of tooth stains and obtaining a whiter smile.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

Your dentist has some great options available for tooth whitening. Before you do anything to your teeth, discuss the options with your dentist. Everyone’s dental health is different, and what works for someone else may not be the best option for you.

Getting your teeth whitened in the dentist’s office has benefits. You don’t need to worry about the gaps in whitening that happen sometimes with at-home strips. You’ll also be worry-free about over-bleaching or gum damage which is sometimes a problem with over-the-counter at-home kits.

Zoom or Boost Whitening

There are two ways the dentist lightens your teeth in the office:

  • Hydrogen peroxide gel
  • Hydrogen peroxide gel plus a lamp or laser device

The two options are almost identical, except the second one uses a special lamp or laser to activate the gel.

It only takes about two hours to have your teeth lightened in the dentist’s office. The dentist first applies protective gel to your gums.

Following this, the cosmetic dentist applies regular gel or a light-activated gel to your teeth. If it’s the light-activated gel, the dentist uses a lamp or laser to activate the gel.

You’ll see immediate results. You’ll also get a customized at-home kit for touch-ups.

Veneers

If you’ve had damage or tooth stains that won’t respond to traditional whitening methods, veneers are another option. Veneers are expensive and take many visits to the office over the course of several weeks.

At-Home Whitening Options

There are several at-home options for whitening your teeth, but you won’t see the same dramatic results you get from the dentist’s office. These are good options if you don’t have the budget for an in-office whitening procedure.

Over-the-Counter Teeth-Whitening Kits

Drugstores carry teeth-whitening kits that are trays, strips, or brushes. You’ll leave the strip or gel on your teeth for about 30 minutes a couple of times a day. You’ll see a difference after a few days, but it takes about two weeks for full results.

Whitening Toothpaste

Most brands of toothpaste now offer at least one type of whitening toothpaste. How to get whiter teeth with whitening toothpaste? Use it consistently for several weeks.

Always look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on any product to ensure the product is safe and works as claimed.

Wondering how to keep teeth white? Eat lots of fruits and veggies and avoid foods that stain teeth, such as red wine, coffee, and acidic drinks. Avoid smoking too!
