The first step in how to choose a rug is to determine the amount of foot traffic the rug will see. For example, do you have kids or pets? These sweet, adorable little creatures can wreak havoc on a rug if you don’t select the right material and/or color. Best to be prepared and think ahead.
Size
Of course, the size of your new rug will depend on the size of your space. For example, living room rugs can be a bit larger and may take up most of the floor while a rug in the kitchen may be better suited on a smaller scale, say under the dining room table where it’s easy to vacuum.
Color
The color is really up to you, however, again, remember those little creatures you have running about. Darker colors hide stains better, although, they can make a room feel bleak and cold. Lighter colors will brighten any space, but you better be prepared with a wet/dry vacuum for any accidents.
Pattern
Patterns are fun and can really add some spice to your space. Just remember not to get too pattern-y in your space. For example, if you plan to have patterns on the curtains, you may wish to avoid patterns on the rug and/or vice versa.
Shape
The shape of the rug also depends on the room and what you’re using it for. For example, if you have a round table in the dining room, a round rug will look nice, although a square or rectangle rug could also offset the shapes in the room and make the space feel more structured.
Natural vs. Synthetic
If you plan to design your own rug, you should think about the types of rugs that you can choose from. Natural rugs are often made from things like cotton and jute while synthetic rugs are crafted from nylon and acrylic. These fibers will make a difference in cleaning up later.
